John Thomas Fowler

John Thomas Fowler was born and grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and has one son, Taylor. He is a project scholar and consultant for the South Carolina Humanities Council, and is currently working on a Folk Music in America traveling exhibit. The Smithsonian exhibit New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music is planned to visit six sites in South Carolina in 2011 and 2012.

Fowler is a member of the South Carolina Community Scholars Institution and the founder of the Carolina Old Time Music Network. He has conducted a number of field studies and produced several documentaries for South Carolina Educational TV. A number of his field recording projects have been released nationally and several recordings are archived at museums and folklore websites. Fowler has produced an old-time music radio show for the past fifteen years called “This Old Porch” on Sunday afternoons on WNCW 88.7 FM.

A member of the South Carolina Storytelling Network, Fowler performs at festivals, colleges, schools, and libraries throughout the southeastern region and is an avid music collector. As a traditional musician, he has won a number of “roots” music awards. He plays a number of folk instruments, including the banjo, guitar, spoons, autoharp and washboard.
